2010 - Happy New Year

2010 – Happy New Year!

Well, here we are. Ten years into the New Millenium. Post 9/11. Post Economic meltdown. Post Bush-Cheney. Several degrees into Global Warming. Several setbacks into Global Cooperation. The backside of the Great Recession. The end of a decade of decadence. Folks, straighten your chair backs, fasten your seatbelts and prepare for landing; somehow or another, we made it!

So – as we come to the end of this bumpy ride—what’s next for us?

I have no crystal ball to foretell the future, but my hunch is that, like so many generations of God’s people on planet Earth, we are about discover the consequences of having to collectively learn things the hard way!

Here are just a few of the tough lessons in store for us:

  • Real estate, stocks and credit cards are not bottomless treasure troves. Financial success comes from real products and real services. Those things come from real work, the thing we most control as individuals, the thing that makes us better people in a better world. Having a job, finding a purpose, making a contribution to society is still honorable. Let’s work together.
  • Economics is a not a moral endeavor. Numbers are just numbers, and love of money is still the root of all evil. When profitability and financial wizardry is the only thing we measure, we not only destroy businesses, we destroy people and the planet. It’s time to use democracy, governments, organiizations and global trade as tools to bring prosperity to every family in every nation.
  • There is no pill to make us thin, healthy and happy. With the healthcare debate in full swing, the most important thing to remember is that our health and our national budget are impacted by every choice we make every day. It’s wrong to expect medicine to fix problems our lifestyles of excess cause. To be healthy, we must partner with our doctors to live healthy at the lowest cost.

  • God never endorses war. We live in a big, noisy, exuberant world full of all kinds of people with all kinds of ideas. Our differences should not drag us into violence. We need each other; we can also care about each other. Let’s express our faith as community and compassion, not conflict and chaos. Let’s set an example for children everywhere; let’s commit to a more peaceful world, one relationship at a time.

  •  Earth is a sacred place. Our success, even our survival, depends on the health of our planet. How we take care of her will determine how we take care of us. There is so much at stake; all of life is interconnected. The Native Americans were right: we need to think about the Seventh Generation, our children’s children’s children. There are many intersections of science and faith; the environment is one of them. Let’s embrace our future.

It’s a new decade. Life begins again today. The best news is: we are in charge. We will decide how the next ten years will be remembered. Just think how much progress we can make if we focus on our hopes and prayers and dreams and not just our desires. It won’t be easy, so when we get discouraged, I suggest we use InSpiritry and take a God’s eye view.  You might try it:

  • Widen your lens to see more of the truth.

  • Open your mind to creative new possibilities.

  • And soften your heart to embrace other people.

We have a lot of work to do, friends. The world is a bit lost and confused, and we can guide the way forward. Our personal lives are challenging, and we can be courageous enough to meet them. Inspiring stories are waiting to be written, and we are the authors. We are the ones we have been waiting for, and this is our time. Let’s celebrate 2010 as the start of a great decade for the Greater Good.

When We Embrace Our Future, We Can Be a Blessing!
