InSpiritry Question for the Day 6-4-09: Learning to Drive
“When a teenager wants to learn to drive, don’t stand in her way!”
There are many rites of passage for kids growing up in America in the past half century: the first day of school, spending the first night away from home, learning to ride a bike. With each experience, adults help children move away from the safety of home to acquire new skills. Each event is an important step towards independence — that ultimate goal of childhood!
Another of those experiences most of us remember is learning to drive. For the first time, we had to turn the key, put the car in gear, use the rearview mirror, turn smoothly, stop without causing whiplash all the while enduring whichever adult has been brave enough to ride in the car with us! Do you remember your first time behind the wheel? Who was your “instructor” and what do you remember about your “instruction”? Did you feel afraid, excited, proud? Did anything funny happen? Anything terrible? Anything wonderful?
The stories of our rites of passage can teach us much about ourselves. Our memories are worth remembering and sharing!
