Question for the Day: May 27, 2009

“President Obama has announced that Sonia Sotomayor

is his nominee for the Supreme Court.“

Yesterday, after several weeks of consideration, President Obama introduced us to the woman he is nominating as the next Supreme Court Justice. Most of us had never heard of her, though she is well-known in the justice department and was on most “short lists” for the court. In the past few hours we have learned her inspiring story of overcoming early personal challenges (Puerto Rican immigrant parents, a widowed mother who worked two jobs, a life in a New York housing project, childhood diabetes) to attend Ivy League schools and have an impressive legal and judicial career. We have heard her strong but gracious acceptance of the nomination. We know that Sotomayor would join only one other woman at the Supreme Court and be the first Hispanic. She has told us that as a Latina, a child of poverty, a single woman and an intellectual, she brings her experiences with her to the bench, something that answers President Obama’s desire to choose someone who understands how Court decisions affect normal life.

Think about the Supreme Court and its job of delivering justice. Think about what justice means: laws, fairness, democracy, wisdom. Think about the changing future of America.

InSpiritry Question for the Day:  What is your first impression of Sonia Sotomayor as Supreme Court Justice…and what does that tell you about yourself?
