Question for the Day: May 22, 2009

“When you don’t want to do something

one excuse is as good as another.”

                                                  Yiddish proverb

This quote is a reminder that we have more control over our lives that we would sometimes like to admit!

Do you have things stay on your to-do lists: paying bills, homework, housework, a phone call, repairs, losing weight, making a life change, serving your community? Many of us claim the reason for things not getting done is lack of time or money or sleep or help or even good weather, but most of the time our excuses don’t hold up to scrutiny. If we’re honest, we know there are things, as the proverb above aptly suggests, we just don’t want to do!

If you have something you keep putting off, it’s worth doing a self-check to see why. Seeing ourselves honestly is the first step in overcoming your stumbling blocks. What about you? Do you avoid things because you are afraid you might make a mistake? Are you worried about the outcome of your choices? Maybe you are uncertain and embarrassed to ask for advice. You may be putting something off because you don’t really believe it is important enough to warrant your energies. Your hesitation might be because of sadness—you just can’t summon the will.  Or you might be grudgingly doing it for someone else.

Greater Good Thinking means that we try to see our small but burdensome tasks for what they are: the next steps toward our larger purpose, our longterm relationships, our life goals, the Greater Good, God’s view of our lives! With the Big Picture in mind, we can strengthen our commitment by focusing on why something needs to be done and on what we can accomplish. To get started, try restating your long term desires and not just complaining about your short-term list of tasks. When you recommit to your future, you accomplish so much. Best of all, you are able to celebrate the accepting the wisdom that ”if you don’t want to do something, one excuse is as good as another.”
