An Open Letter to Conservatives

Conservative America,

I know many people are stunned by the loss of presidential candidate John McCain, and his running mate Sarah Palin, and the victory of President-elect Barak Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden. Many 0f you may think we ”liberals” are dangerous. You may even feel your country is in deep trouble.  In angry and fearful voices, some are already saying,  They will never take away our guns…our rights…our freedom…our wealth!

If you are one of those worried about what this election means for America, here’s food for thought on some important issues:

  • PoliticsDon’t worry…unless you think our country belongs to someone besides its people. For too long a few have kept government from serving the many.
  • SecurityDon’t worry… unless you care more about your safety than the safety of others. It’s time to stop being afraid of the rest of the world and start being a partner for peace.
  • Foreign PolicyDon’t worry… unless you value violence over the power of words and ideas. War is never the right answer and every perspective offers some truth.
  • Wealth – Don’t worry… unless you disagree with rewarding honest work and ethical investment. Wealth is not worth losing our core values (or our economy.)
  • Healthcare Don’t worry… unless you believe there are people who don’t deserve a doctor’s care. America is too blessed not to have healthy families.
  • Education Don’t worry… unless you think some children should have to follow their dreams without adequate preparation. Public education is sacred, and higher education should be affordable.
  • Energy Don’t worry… unless you would rather have cheap gas now than energy resources in the future. Technology is more than a way to invent better electronic toys.
  • EnvironmentalistsDon’t worry…unless you don’t really care about the Earth we give our children. We really are taking more than our share, and science has new answers.
  • GunsDon’t worry… unless you would be willing to use a gun to get your way. This is not about hunting; America’s gun-related murder rate is appalling.
  • ReligionDon’t worry… unless you want to take away someone else’s God. There is no religion that calls for hate, and spirituality opens our hearts to others.
  • Race - Don’t worry…unless you believe your family heritage is superior to all others. People are people.
  • ElitismDon’t worry…unless you have a sense of being better than someone else. All that matters is how you bless the world you are in.
  • Morals - Don’t worry… unless you support people who don’t have any. Great leaders lead with honor.

If this election didn’t go your way, if you feel angry or frightened or sad, open your hearts to this: Barak Obama is calling us to face down our fears, resist the temptation to hate, draw on our faith in each other and be our best selves as Americans! This is a historic time for us–all of us. Let’s believe that no matter how much we disagree, we can have a conversation. Let’s try to understand that the things that upset us can also teach us. Let’s embrace the politics of possibility and, like Esther in the Old Testament, who was called to lead her people, believe that we were “made for such a time as this!”

When We Set Aside Our Fears, We Can Be a Blessing!

One Response to “An Open Letter to Conservatives”

  1. Mary Delaney Says:

Oh my goodness! I just saw this entry (November 5, 2008) re-posted on another blog. I was really offended by what you think of conservatives. I am a conservative woman, but certainly not without morals, and I live every day caring for God’s earth and its creatures. I believe in the Constitution AS IT IS; that judges should interpret law, not make it, and that wages belong in the hands of those who earned them. I was a lifelong Democrat until about 8 years ago when I realized they were no longer the party of the people. The only Democrats I knew were elitists who favored big government programs, none of which helped the working people I knew here in the “heartland” of America.
Your “open letter” is offensive to conservatives here in Iowa, where we helped each other during the floods of 2008. You didn’t see us on TV chanting “help me”. Obama claimed we “cling to our guns and religion” in small town America. We also cling to each other. We don’t wait for the big government programs to take care of our neighbors. So don’t worry.
