Blessed are the Peacemakers
Sleep in Heavenly Peace…
During this last week of the Christian Advent season and near the end of another violent year in the world, true Peace deserves our consideration more than ever. That said, for spiritual people of all traditions at any time of the year, there is no greater hope and no more essential calling than Peace. It is our most pure path to God.
But what is Peace? Where do we find it? How do we make it? First, we must think beyond politics. More than nonviolence, more than prevention of war, more than settling our differences, peace is a way of life — an internalized morality based on balancing our own self-interest with the needs of others. Just think about the possibilities for the world with leaders like that!
Lest, in our cynicism, we dismiss this idea of personal and global Peace as an impossible dream, I would ask you to remember the millions of people hard at peacework at this very minute. As you read this, around the world and in our own communities, inspired men and women are settling disagreements, developing solutions, facilitating progress, reconciling adversaries and serving those in need. They are out mentors!
To check how much you know about some of these important peace leaders, go to Blessed are the Peacemakers, sponsored by the San Antonio Peace Center. There you will find photos of peaceworkers of note–how many do you recognize? Do you know their stories? Take the challenge! Then read about each one! Draw inspiration! Rekindle your own peaceful spirit!
While the amazing people profiled have changed our world–some in huge ways–peacemakers also include those who quietly act every day for the good of others:
- Teachers who instill a passion for understanding as well as knowledge.
- Office workers who support one another in times of heartache.
- Doctors who help patients heal their hearts as well as their bodies.
- Retail clerks who are gentle even with unkind customers.
- Teenagers who reach out to friends in trouble.
- Parents who encourage their children to care about others.
Perhaps, you are this kind of peacemaker! If so, please accept my hearfelt gratitude and admiration; you offer inspiration and strength to the rest of us. Best of all, your dedication is not in vain; each day our world is a step closer to Peace because of your efforts! If you are not working for Peace, the New Year is a great time to begin.
As we close out this year, let’s each commit not just to continue to bring peaceful energy into the world, but to encourage one another as we work. If you know of someone who lives out the ideals of peace, give them your support and praise. If there is a person who inspires you to believe in peace, seek them out. If there are writings that open your heart, find time for contemplation and study. If there are things you do that affirm you as a peacemaker, make those a part of your routine. Whatever our circumstances, we can grow in our peacemaking!
