Unity World Day of Prayer

Today is Unity Church’s 14th annual World Day of Prayer. As individuals and as a global family, it is a chance for us to celebrate all that is good in our lives, to commit to peace and to embrace the transforming power of our collective prayers. Around the world, festivities are planned and prayers are being lifted.

Whatever you have planned for today, I hope you will set aside a few minutes during the day for spiritual conversation. Allow yourself to be leave your everyday concerns. Open your heart to God’s unconditional love, the collective spirit of humanity and the awesome power of the universe.

Celebrate your blessings–they are many!

Admit your faults–they are few!

Hold up in prayer each of the wonderful people in your life. Seek conciliation with those with whom you are at odds. Acknowledge the goodness of those whose love you share.

Stay focused. Draw deep breaths of inspiration from your silence. Listen for wisdom as you dwell in a prayerful state. Meditate on possibility, on hope, on joy.

Now draw on your compassion to consider those who are hurting or lonely or hungry or fearful or exhausted or angry or confused or embarrassed or ashamed. Seek wisdom for ways to ease their suffering; offer yourself to the world as a promise of peace.

Finally, look into the future…of the next minute, the next hour, the next year. See your place in God’s world, recommit to your personal mission, affirm your highest ideals, imagine the best that can be.

When you have spent a few minutes in prayer, gently return to your routine. My guess is that you will be a brighter light, a sweeter soul, a better person in a what seems to be a brighter, sweeter, better world!

As you go about your day, realize that hundreds of thousands of others are also recharging their lives with prayer today and that each of them shares your dreams of peace. Look for them; perhaps you will know them by their smiles!

And to each of you: Whatever your faith tradition, have a blessed day, and never forget…

You Can Be a Blessing!
