With Earth Day celebrations three months in the past, you might not be expecting a worldwide festival for the environment at this time of year. Think again!

Today is 7-7-07 (July 7, 2007), the long-awaited global celebration of music and environmental awareness called  Live Earth!

In case you are saying, “Live what?!” read on:

Live Earth is a monumental music event that will bring together more than 2 billion people on July 7, 2007 to combat the climate crisis. Live Earth will stage concerts in New York, London, Sydney, Tokyo, Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro, Johannesburg, Hamburg and Istanbul, and will feature a mix of both legendary music acts like The Police, Genesis, Bon Jovi and Madonna with the latest headliners like Kanye West, Kelly Clarkson, Black Eyed Peas and Jack Johnson.

Live Earth’s 24 hours of music across 7 continents will deliver a worldwide call to action and the solutions necessary to answer that call. Live Earth marks the beginning of a multi-year campaign to drive individuals, corporations and governments to take action to solve the climate crisis. Live Earth is partnering with the Alliance for Climate Protection, The Climate Group, Stop Climate Chaos and other international organizations in this ongoing effort. Live Earth was founded by Kevin Wall, a worldwide executive producer of the Live 8 concert series in 2005, and is supported by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, founder of SOS and producer of the film Inconvenient Truth.

Live Earth will reach a worldwide audience through an unprecedented global media architecture covering all media platforms — TV, radio, web and wireless channels.

SOS is the ongoing messaging campaign and larger movement behind Live Earth. The mission of the SOS campaign is to empower individuals to change their consumer behaviors and motivate corporations and political leaders to enact decisive measures to combat the climate crisis. The message of SOS is that everyone, everywhere can and must Answer the Call to solve the climate crisis.

The environment isn’t just an issue for Al Gore supporters or music fans or even climate specialists–we all share the bounty and the burdens of caring for our natural world.  Of course, what we are  finding out is that, when it comes to the environment, most of us have taken more than our fair share of air and water and resources. Because of our insatiable need for more and more and more, the earth has been damaged forever. Temperatures are rising. Glaciers are melting. Climates are changing. Species are dying.

That said, there is much we can do to take responsibility for our selfish thoughtlessness. First, we can rethink the idea of “our fair share.” What’s really fair about pollution? Second, we can adopt the Native American idea of considering what is best for the Seventh Generation (our descendants in the next millenium.) Finally, we can give the gift of healthy air and water to our neighbors around the world. In working for a healthy planet, we are working for each other, for our children, for our future.

Let’s practice InSpiritry and be creative in our problem solving, collaborative in our work for the planet and courageous in our ability to change. Also, let’s remember consilience–all knowledge (science, philosophy, faith, business) should work together for good. Let’s celebrate our natural world.

Find out more. Follow the link to Live Earth or explore other environmental sites. Then do the most important thing, take action in your own life (Think global; act local):

  • Reconsider your driving patterns.
  • Conserve energy at home.
  • Be honest about needs vs. wants.
  • See yourself as connected to the world.
  • Urge your legislators to vote green.
  • Teach your children well.

As for today’s concerts, join the party! Celebrate our Unity of purpose! Live Earth should remind us that Bob Marley was right with his joyous reggae reminder to honor the “Father of Creation” when he sang:

One World, One Heart. Let’s Get Together and Feel All Right!

Working in Unity for the Planet Can Be a Blessing!
