InSpiritry & the Greater Good: Compassion

What is Compassion?

The word, Compassion, comes from Latin roots meaning "with" and "strong feeling." When we feel compassion, our hearts open to the plight of others. In the context of InSpiritry, Compassion suggests a lifestyle of living beyond self. It gives us the very basis for our Greater Good Thinking: We Care! And when we care, we want to reach out, to help, to heal, to empower, to love, to serve. Compassion inspires us to put into action our personal dedication to Self, Spirit, Humanity and Nature. In practice, Compassion can take the form of giving time, energy and money in a wide variety of Greater Good endeavors like acts of friendship, volunteer work, community service, social activism, global NGOs but also public health, populist politics, religious tolerance, cultural diversity and social justice.

How can we practice Compassion?

Living with Compassion as part of a life of InSpiritry means opening our hearts to others in the belief that our most sacred task on earth is to take care of one another. We give evidence to our Passion for the Greater Good in our acts of Compassion. Here are some reminders of how we can practice Compassion in our everday lives:

Be Empathetic

Look for connections rather than differences.

Be open to other points of view.

Try to discern other people's experiences.

Listen Passionately

Give other people your full attention.

Listen to learn not to debate.

Hear what is not spoken.

See Story

See each person and event as an amazing story.

Be aware of your own personal story.

See your actions as part of a story that will be told later.

Show Grace & Mercy

Be kind first.

Forgive and ask forgiveness.

Give more than is deserved.

Serve

Put your beliefs into action.

Make a difference in people's lives.

Be an everyday force for the Greater Good.
